Apple Maps Ads Launch This Summer. Your Dealership Probably Isn't On It.

Apple is turning Maps into an ad platform this summer, starting in the US and Canada.

If your dealership's Apple Maps listing has never been claimed — and the odds say it hasn't — you're about to get outbid on a channel you were never competing in.

Start with your own analytics

Pull your device report. Here's month-to-date from a store we monitor:

  • iOS — 14,000 sessions
  • Android — 7,500
  • Windows — 4,200
  • macOS — 1,800
  • Other — 390

Apple devices: 56.7% of all sessions. iOS alone beats Android nearly two to one.

That's not a national survey. That's one dealership's actual traffic, this month.

Now check your referral report

Look for Apple Maps in it. You'll find approximately nothing.

That's not because nobody's coming from Apple Maps. It's because Apple Maps place-card taps generally arrive with no referrer attached — they land in "direct." Google Maps traffic shows up clean and labeled. Apple's doesn't.

So your report says: Google Maps matters, Apple Maps doesn't exist.

Which is precisely why 58% of businesses have never claimed their Apple listing, only 16% actively use Apple Business Connect, and roughly 59% don't know features like Showcases exist. It isn't laziness. Everyone is reading a report that structurally cannot see the channel.

The honest version

I'm not going to tell you Apple Maps is half your traffic. It isn't.

Google still dominates. Something like 88% of users say they prefer Google Maps against 12% for Apple, and a 2023 EU study put Google Business Profile at 93% of total map impressions. If you only ever do one thing, do Google.

But "preference" is the wrong measurement for a car dealer. Here's why.

What a survey can't see

When someone taps the address on your VDP in Safari, Apple Maps opens.

When someone asks Siri for directions to your store, Apple Maps opens.

When someone navigates to you from a car with CarPlay — and CarPlay ships in more than 80% of new vehicles — Apple Maps opens.

None of those people were asked which app they prefer. They used the default. A survey measures opinion; the default measures behavior. Apple has claimed Apple Maps sees roughly 3x the usage of the next mapping app on iOS. And when Congress asked Apple what share of iPhone users had even downloaded Google Maps, Apple's answer was that it couldn't provide the figure with any meaningful accuracy.

Nobody has that number. Not Apple, not the analysts, not us. What we do know is that the 12% figure measures stated preference — not what opens when a shopper taps your address on an iPhone.

For a dealership, where "get directions" is the last click before a visit and your customers are sitting in CarPlay, that distinction is the whole thing.

What makes this different from everything else you're sold

There's no auction. No minimum spend. No 20% management fee on top. Today, an Apple Maps place card costs nothing but attention — and about five out of six businesses aren't spending any.

That changes when ads arrive. Apple folded Business Connect, Business Manager, and Business Essentials into a single Apple Business platform on April 14, 2026, and Maps ads launch this summer. The pattern from Apple's App Store ads is instructive: sponsored placements sit alongside organic results, and businesses that already built strong organic profiles carry the advantage into the auction.

So the window is however many weeks are left before your competitors' vendors notice.

What "claimed" actually means

Claiming is the floor, not the work.

A complete Apple place card has verified ownership, accurate hours including holidays, real photos, correct categories, Action Links pointing at what you actually want people to do — schedule service, browse inventory, start a trade appraisal — and active Showcases.

Apple rewards structural completeness and Showcase freshness. It does not reward the keyword-stuffed Posts and Q&A churn that moves Google. Different algorithm, different rules. And critically: your Google listing does not propagate to Apple. They're entirely separate systems with separate data. NAP citation consistency — the thing you may already be paying a few hundred a month for — keeps your name, address, and phone aligned across directories. That's plumbing. It is not a managed Apple presence.

One more thing most dealers miss: Apple Maps pulls its reviews from third parties like Yelp, and Apple Business Connect gives you no way to respond to them. If you wrote Yelp off as a dead channel, understand what that means — Yelp is writing your Apple Maps reputation, and you handed them the pen.

Where this doesn't matter

If you're a metro store with a strong Google presence and a full service drive, this is a marginal gain. Real, but marginal. Nobody should sell you a five-figure Apple Maps program — there's nothing to buy yet.

And if your Google Business Profile is a mess, fix that first. 93% of map impressions is 93% of map impressions.

This is a small channel nobody is contesting, about to become a paid channel where early organic work compounds. That's the entire pitch. It's worth an afternoon, not a budget line.

Do this today

Open maps.apple.com in any browser — you don't need an iPhone. Search your store. Then search your three closest competitors.

Count how many are claimed. Count how many have photos. Count how many have a single Showcase.

Then decide whether an afternoon is worth it.

This is the kind of work Astra runs continuously across every profile a dealer has, not just Google — because Control Center already knows the hours, the inventory, and the offers, so keeping fourteen place cards current isn't fourteen times the work. It's the same work, pointed at more surfaces.

But you don't need us to check. Go look.
