The Best Car Dealership Technology for 2027, Layer by Layer

Most stores don't need more software. They need fewer tools and one owner for each layer. Here's the 2027 dealership stack, the main options in each layer, and which one to consolidate first.

the 2027 stack

Five layers. Consolidate the easiest one first.

Disclosure: we sell into one of these layers, marketing execution, and we named our own service as the pick there. For the other layers we list the main options from each vendor's public materials as of October 2026. We don't sell DMS or CRM software today.

Layer 1 · Consolidate first

Marketing execution

  • Our pick: Dealer Data One Fully Managed. Astra and our team run website changes, SEO content and strategy, creative and specials, ads on every platform you use, and every business listing.
  • Price: $3,000 per rooftop per month, month to month. Your ad spend goes straight to the ad platforms, with no management fee on top.
  • Why first: This layer is usually split across an agency plus separate listings, SEO and social vendors. It's the easiest to switch and has no long migration.
  • Alternative: A traditional agency. See our comparison of Astra and dealer ad agencies.

Layer 2 · Buy one, not three

Customer conversation

  • Main options: Impel, Matador, Numa and Podium for AI that answers texts, chats and calls and books appointments.
  • What to look for: Fast handoff to a person, clear disclosure that the customer is talking to AI, and coverage of both sales and service.
  • Watch for: Stores often end up with chat, texting and phone AI from three different vendors that don't share history.

Layer 3 · Test before you renew

Website and merchandising

  • Main options: Dealer.com (Cox Automotive), Dealer Inspire (Cars Commerce), DealerOn, which bought Sincro in 2024, Team Velocity, Dealer eProcess and Overfuel.
  • 2026 moves: DealerOn put AI search visibility tools into beta in May. Team Velocity bought Foundation Direct in May. Overfuel raised $6 million for AI development in September.
  • What to look for: Fast VDP and SRP templates and priced listings readable without JavaScript. Run our free website speed test before you renew.

Layer 4 · Keep one source

Data, attribution and reporting

  • Main options: Clarivoy for attribution, Dealer Insights for marketing analytics, VistaDash from DealerBuilt, and Fullpath's customer data platform.
  • What to look for: Data you own and can export, and a tool that changes decisions rather than adding another login.
  • Watch for: If a dashboard hasn't changed a decision in 90 days, it's a cost, not a tool.

Layer 5 · Switch last

Core systems: DMS and CRM

  • DMS options: CDK, which showed an agentic assistant called AIVA at NADA 2026; Reynolds and Reynolds, which introduced its Rey AI agent in January 2026; Tekion, which markets itself as AI-native; and Pinewood.AI, new to the US through Lithia, with its first US stores going live in late 2026.
  • CRM options: VinSolutions, which introduced its next-generation AI virtual assistant in January 2026; DriveCentric; DealerSocket, which Solera upgraded with AI lead scoring in February 2026; and CDK's Elead.
  • Why last: These are the most expensive and slowest systems to change. Get the other four layers clean first.
  • Coming 2027: Dealer Data One's Unified Dealership System, built to replace CRM, DMS and inventory management with one platform run by Astra. It is not available yet.

how to consolidate

Cut vendors without losing anything

1. List every charge

Pull 12 months of payables. For each tool, note the cost, the job it does, who logs in, and when it renews.

2. Sort into the five layers

Overlap shows up fast: two review tools, three dashboards reporting the same ad spend, and line items priced at $0 that nobody runs.

3. Give each layer one owner

Start with marketing execution, then reporting. Remove old vendors' scripts from your website when you cancel.

The full process is in our guide to consolidating your dealership tech stack.

Common questions

Dealership technology: common questions

What technology does a car dealership need?

Five layers: core systems (DMS and CRM), a website, a way to answer customers, a single source of reporting, and someone running the marketing. Most stores pay for more tools than that, with overlap inside each layer.

How many vendors does a typical dealership use?

There's no reliable published average. Car Dealership Guy's Yossi Levi forecast in September 2026 that dealers could go from about 30 providers to about 10 by 2029, but that's a prediction, not a survey.

Which dealership technology should I consolidate first?

Marketing execution. It's usually split across several vendors, it's the easiest layer to switch, and it's where separate charges for listings, SEO, social and ads can become one.

Is there an AI-native DMS?

Tekion markets its platform as AI-native, and CDK and Reynolds both introduced AI agents in 2026. Dealer Data One's Unified Dealership System, built around Astra, is planned for 2027.

Your dealership, finally running on true intelligence.

Astra and the DD1 team run your ads, SEO, website, listings and creative for one flat price per rooftop. Month to month, and your data stays yours.
